Nonlinear dynamics of running: Speed, stability, symmetry and the effects of leg amputations

چکیده
In this paper, we study dynamic stability during running, focusing on the effects of speed and the use of a leg prosthesis. We compute and compare the maximal Lyapunov exponents of kinematic time-series data from subjects with and without unilateral transtibial amputations running at a wide range of speeds. We find that the dynamics of the affected leg with the runningspecific prosthesis are less stable than the dynamics of the unaffected leg, and also less stable than the biological legs of the non-amputee runners. Surprisingly, we find that the center-of-mass dynamics of runners with two intact biological legs are slightly less stable than those of runners with amputations. 1 ar X iv :1 30 5. 68 21 v1 [ nl in .C D ] 2 9 M ay 2 01 3 Our results suggest that while leg asymmetries may be associated with instability, runners may compensate for this effect by increased control of their center-of-mass dynamics.

Background:Despite some successful dynamic simulation of self-impact double pendulum (SIDP)-as humanoid robots legs or arms- studies, there is limited information available about the control of one leg locomotion. Objective :The main goal of this research is to improve the reliability of the mammalians leg locomotion and building more elaborated models close to the natural movements, by modelin...
متن کاملPrediction of sprint active women performance using vertical and leg stiffness
Introduction: The ability to attain high level of speed is an essential component of success in many sports fields. However, physical qualities that underpin this ability remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of leg stiffness and vertical stiffness in predicting sprint running. Methods: 50 healthy females were selected among physical education students. The requi...
متن کاملManuscript : Stable Running with Segmented Legs ∗ †
In human and animal running spring-like leg behavior is found. In a spring-mass model, running proves to be self-stable in terms of external perturbations or variations in leg properties (e.g. landing angle). However, biological limbs are not made of springs but, rather, consist of segments where springlike behavior can be localized at joint level. Here, we use a two-segment leg model to invest...
متن کاملBiomechanical Analysis of the Influence of SACH Foot and Dynamic-Response Foot in Individual With Unilateral Transtibial Amputee During Running
Objective: Amputation of the lower limb due to loss of part of the musculoskeletal structure reduces performance and increases injury during locomotion. The effect of various types of prosthetic feet has been analyzed in several studies during running. The purpose of this study was a biomechanical analysis of the influence of SACH and Dynamic-Response foot on several kinetic variables in the st...
